A small, but noticeably-connected and decent sized number of people are found dead. All were found with suicide notes.
Detective protagonist believes said notes to be written in bullshit, as is usually the case with these stories. Surely there's a murderer setting these scenarios up to only look like suicide, and just isn't very creative about how they choose to cover their tracks.
Surely it's a homicidal case, and not a suicidal one.
Nifty little twist, though: both realities are true.
The, "murderer" sees people who are depressed and miserable, and saves them. Either kills them outright, or talks them into following through with suicidal thoughts that may or may not have even been there to begin with.
The character is certain they're helping.
Assisting in a way that the, "victim" didn't even know they wanted.
